For most people, going to the dentist is not their favorite thing to do, but for an estimated 30 percent of adults visiting the dentist, it is quite scary. The fear can range from mild nervousness to full blown panic attacks. Some patients refuse to see a dentist for 20 years sometimes, due to their fear. It is only when they are wracked with terrible pain that they will run to the dentist for help.

Now with different forms of sedation for their patients, dentists can finally relieve many of the fears patients have of going to the dentist. For some patients, all that is needed is a small form of calming to allow the dentist to perform the dental work. Nitrous oxide is very good for this amount of calming effect. It puts a person in an almost twilight sleep which is somewhat like someone taking a 10 mg. valium. Another choice the dentist may choose is to prescribe a 10 mg. valium one hour before the scheduled appointment. This works very well for many of the patients. Nitrous oxide can also be added to the effects of the valium once the patient is in the treatment room. Other forms of anxiety medication may be prescribed one hour before the appointment and then more of the medication can be taken at the dentist office if the patient is still too nervous.

Sedation dentistry is completely different from these other methods. With sedation dentistry, the patient is given a pill, which will put the person in a twilight sleep, yet are still awake. Once the treatment is completed, the patient does not remember the experience in the treatment room. This is a very safe and effective means of treatment for patients who have phobias about visiting a dentist. Full IV sedation is normally reserved for oral surgeons or periodontists, who surgically remove teeth, perform root canals and dental implants for their patients. Another aspect of sedation dentistry is the dentist can perform more work than they normally would if the patient were awake.

There may be many reasons that can cause patients to have anxiety over a dental appointment. Sometimes it is the smell of the office, the sound of the drills, fear of pain, fear of shots or just fear of not being in control. With the advancements in dentistry today, patients should no longer fear visiting a dentist.

Dental bridges are prosthetics engineered to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Their structural integrity within the mouth replies upon the two abutments anchoring the bridge. These abutments can be natural teeth, teeth capped with crowns, or dental implants. According to research, almost 70 percent of all Americans between the ages of 35 and 45 have lost at least one tooth either through an accident, gum disease and decay, or as the result of a failed root canal. For many of these people, a dental bridge can be a second chance for a great smile.

Dental bridges may be made out of porcelain, porcelain and metal, or gold. Great care must be taken when creating and fitting a dental bridge so that it conforms to the contours of the patient’s mouth. If teeth don’t stay in proper alignment within the mouth, a patient is at greater risk for tooth decay, gum disease, misaligned bite and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ.)

If a patient decides that a dental bridge is the right option after consulting with his or her dentist, the dentist or the dentist’s assistant will make a mold of the patient’s for use by the dental laboratory that is preparing the bridge. The abutment teeth may need to be reshaped in order to support the new bridge more effectively.

The ideal candidate for a dental bridge is someone who understands the importance of good oral hygiene. When properly cared for, a dental bridge can last as long as 15 years. It can be challenging to keep a bridge completely free of plaque, but fortunately some helpful products have come on the market in the last ten years that can greatly facilitate this task.

Superfloss is a specialized kind of dental floss that comes in precut segments with thin ends, optimized for slipping into the tight spaces between the bridge and the gums. Floss threaders are also useful for cleaning that hard-to-reach space. Of course, you must also brush your teeth after every meal, and visit your dentist twice a year for regular checkups and a professional teeth cleaning.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 30,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer every year and nearly 8,000 people die annually from the disease. Only about half all oral cancer patients are still alive five years after their diagnosis.

Regular dental exams are very important for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Your dentist can look for early signs of diseases. This is when they can be more successfully treated. April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month. As part of this public awareness campaign, the Academy of General Dentistry is recommending that patients ask for an oral cancer screening during their next visit.

Oral cancer can cause bleeding sores in the mouth, difficulty in chewing or swallowing, numbness of the tongue, ear pain, and lumps or hard spots in the mouth. If you have any of these symptoms, you should make an appointment to see your dentist immediately.

Patients will have a much better chance for survival and will face less invasive treatment if the disease it detected early. Early detection is extremely important because treating oral cancer during its advanced stages can lead to severe pain, the loss of function, and permanent facial disfigurement.

Your dentist will thoroughly examine inside your mouth, the roof of your gums, the back of your throat, your tongue, the floor of your mouth, as well as the lymph nodes in your neck. This will help determine if there are any unusual tissue changes in those areas. A biopsy may be needed in order to find out if any of the tissue is cancerous.

Remember, April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month. In order to detect this potentially deadly disease in its early stages and to stay on top of your overall dental health, the Academy of General Dentistry recommends that you visit your dentist at least once every six months.

Dental implants are growing in popularity as an option to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are made of titanium or a titanium alloy and are used to replace the roots of a lost tooth. Titanium has a propensity for bonding with bone. Your dentist can attach an artificial tooth to the implant once it is bonded. The replacement tooth has the look and feel of a natural tooth and is designed to last a lifetime. It also will not decay.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants can preserve or restore your smile. People with missing teeth are often reluctant to smile, avoid talking in public settings, and avoid eating in the presence of others. Missing teeth are a source of great embarrassment for most people. People who have lost a tooth, but want to look their best and retain their confidence and poise in public can benefit from a dental implant. An implant can preserve their natural, radiant smile.

Tooth loss is often the result of bone deterioration. The loss of one tooth can lead to the loss of other teeth. A dental implant can stop bone loss, stabilize the bone and promote bone growth.

Dental implants can also provide support for dentures, both full and partial. Essentially, the dental implant serves as an anchor for the denture plate or bridgework.

The loss of a tooth reduces your chewing capacity and places additional stress on the remaining teeth. Chewing may be uncomfortable and may cause injury and pain to the exposed gum. The additional stress may also lead to damage or failure in some of the remaining teeth. A dental implant can restore your chewing surface, decrease stress on other teeth, eliminate chewing pain and protect your gums.

The space left by a missing tooth can cause other teeth to become misaligned. So even if the missing tooth is in the back of your mouth and is not visible, it can still eventually ruin your smile. An implant can help keep your teeth aligned, help protect gum tissue and help the jaw retain its shape.

Advantages Over Dentures

Some people get a dental bridge to replace a lost tooth because the initial cost is often lower than the cost of a dental implant. But most authorities view the implant as superior to a dental bridge. A bridge requires that the two teeth adjacent to the missing tooth must be ground down to have caps placed over them. Often these adjacent teeth eventually fail from the stress of the bridge and because they have been weakened by the size reduction. Bridgework also is not anchored to the bone so it can slide and move, resulting in gum injury and soft tissue damage. Nor does bridgework enhance bone stability as an implant does. Bridgework also wears out and often must be replaced. When you add it up, not only are dentures and bridgework inferior to implants, they can also cost significantly more money over your lifetime.

Dental inlays and onlays are part of the leading edge in dentistry that has over 20 years of research behind it. You can now forget about those old amalgam or composite fillings that some dentists still use. Part of the reason that the onlay/inlay process is not utilized is due to the cost that insurance companies are unwilling to pay for this service, citing it as being cosmetic. Another reason for opting for amalgam or composite is the price associated with this procedure. One consideration for the inlay process is that the old amalgam and composite materials last a short period considering that the inlay/onlay process last 15+ years.

Many patients are choosing the CAD/Cam treatment plan because of the controversy over amalgam filling material containing mercury. It is suspected in cases of chronic illnesses, autoimmune disorders, oral lesions, birth defects and even mental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. It is also suspected that the composite material used in filling a tooth is made of a resin composite, which now has patients concerned about the risks associated with this type of plastic known as Bisphenol A.

The inlay/onlay process involves the use of a Cerec 3D CAD/CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing) technology, which is composed of camera, computer and milling machine all in one instrument. The optical image is transferred to another computer screen where the dentist designs the restoration process using the CAD technology. The CAM creates the restoration automatically. With the patient waiting for the restoration to be completed, the dentist then bonds the newly restored surface to the patient’s existing tooth. This entire process is usually completed in about an hour.

The inlay/onlay used today makes it impossible to see the difference between the natural teeth and the inlay/onlay restoration. Other benefits to the inlay/only process is the durability of the tooth, oftentimes upward of 100% strength of the tooth, high quality esthetics, composed of metal-free material that acts just like natural tooth enamel and offers color matching so as to blend in with the natural teeth

No longer is it necessary to choose between straight teeth and the discomfort of traditional braces. Traditional braces are often heavy, metallic and generally troublesome, but invisalign clear braces can straighten teeth without the discomfort that those other dental fixes cause. There is no reason to let inconvenience be the reason you have crooked teeth. Your dentist can help you develop a brighter, healthier and straighter smile with invisalign.

Invisalign clear braces can offer all of the same benefits that traditional braces provide. Crooked teeth are not simply an aesthetic concern. Instead, these are the result of improper alignment that can possibly lead to a number of painful health concerns, including gum disease and even TMJ. By straightening improperly aligned teeth, you can become more confident in your smile while also restoring your dental health.

Invisible clear braces work by gradually shifting teeth back into a correct alignment. The braces are custom molded to your teeth, and are altered to provide just enough force to help them straighten over time. After about two weeks, you will return to your dentist to receive a new dental mold. The next mold will be slightly tighter than the previous, as it helps to mold your teeth further into proper alignment. Overtime, this process will help deliver straighter teeth that will help you to feel confident and happy in your new smile.

Invisalign can help you to overcome your crooked teeth, and can do so without requiring all of the discomfort and dietary changes that traditional braces often require. With traditional braces, it is often difficult to eat certain snacks, such as gum or popcorn, but with invisalign these treats are not a concern at all. With clear braces, confidence is not far off. Don’t wait years for your smile to become gorgeous as your mouth is filled with metal. While wearing your invisalign clear braces, you can smile proud without any hesitation.

Are you embarrassed about how your teeth look? Is it sometimes painful or difficult to eat certain foods? If you answered yes to either one of those questions than you are not alone. You should also know there are a number of ways that restorative dentistry can help relieve your discomfort and give you a beautiful smile. Teeth that are missing or decaying do more than just cause embarrassment; they can also cause pain in the mouth and jaw. That’s not a comfortable way to go through life and it can be corrected. Most patients that undergo the different types of restorative dentistry are often pleasantly surprised with the outcome they experience. There are a few different options available including implants, bridges and dentures.

Dental implants are quickly becoming the norm for cosmetic dentistry. Unlike dentures, they are a permanent solution for missing teeth. The process can take a few months to complete but the end result is very natural looking. They are permanently fused to your jawbone with a small piece of titanium and then carefully constructed to match the rest of your teeth. Implants can be used for people who are missing one or more teeth. Having them put in can make eating many of your favorite foods possible again and can help reduce discomfort or pain from missing teeth.

Bridges are yet another permanent option that are used to improve the appearance of your smile. A bridge is placed in spot where your missing tooth is and then permanently connected to the surrounding teeth by using a crown. This helps to provide strength and continuity to the surrounding teeth. It is also very natural looking.

Dentures are one of the least invasive methods of restorative dentistry. Unlike bridges or implants, they are not connected to your other teeth or jaw in a permanent fashion. They are specially made for your mouth and require special care and cleaning. Today’s dentures are more natural looking than ever before and are a wonderful way to help fill in gaps from missing teeth.

All of those methods can be used in order to stop you from being embarrassed about your smile or to help reduce pain in your mouth. Getting the correct restorative dentistry procedure based on your comfort level and your particular needs is very important so that you do not feel any more discomfort or embarrassment due to your smile.

When teeth are misaligned or a space or gap is obvious between the two front teeth, this detracts from a pretty smile and understandably lowers self esteem. Fortunately, there are solutions to any dental problem. With the increase in medical technology for dentistry and the health field, a dentist who excels in cosmetic dentistry may proudly tell his patient, “Yes, I can close the gap in your teeth and make it look natural too.”

The process by which a gap is closed between the front teeth, is with the inclusion of porcelain veneers. These are constructed of a very thin shell that completely encases the tooth to be shaped into the desired size. For gaps, the porcelain veneers may be a little larger in size in order to close up the gap in the middle. Additionally, if there are chips, cracks, crooked or stained teeth, veneers remedy the problem completely with a result so natural, even a keen observer would not be able to tell the teeth are not actual enamel.

The process of closing the gap in teeth is performed by first making an appointment at which an evaluation will be given as well as imaging tests of what needs to be done to correct the misalignment or gap. The patient may be given temporary plastic veneers in order to experience the feel of wearing them, and to see if the appearance is just right. If so, then an impression of the teeth will be made and the veneers ordered.Once they are finished and sent back to the dentist office, it is necessary they be bonded to the actual teeth. The fit, size and color should all match perfectly and because they are made of porcelain, those previous stains will now be a thing of the past, because that new bright glowing smile will last for many years to come.

The aligners are custom made to your teeth, and you simply pop a new set of the aligners in approximately every two weeks as advised by your orthodontist who constructs the aligners to the exact movements needed to shift your teeth into their perfect position. The benefits of using Invisalign are many.

Easier Cleaning
Invisalign aligners are removable, so they are much easier to clean than braces. Braces are adhered to your teeth, so they are difficult to clean around, making it hard to remove all the food and buildup that gets trapped in the brackets and wires. Because you can remove Invisalign aligners, you can brush and floss your teeth like you always did before you had braces so that you can clean them better.

Less Painful
Invisalign aligners gently and gradually move your teeth into position to make them straight. They don’t require the once-a-month or twice-monthly trips to the orthodontist for manual tightening of the wires and brackets, which can be time consuming and extremely painful for some. Rather, the aligners are designed to fit your teeth at each stage to keep moving them into proper position without the bulk of wires and brackets.

Cosmetic Purposes
Perhaps the most significant reason why many people favor Invisalign aligners over traditional braces is for cosmetic purposes. Most people don’t like the look having a mouth full of metal. With Invisalign aligners, no one has to know that you even have braces, so you can show off your pretty smile as it is moving into its proper alignment. This is especially significant for teenagers and adults. Teens oftentimes don’t want to be sporting braces in their school yearbook pictures, and adults don’t like the look of braces either. Invisalign aligners eliminate all the self-consciousness caused by braces, giving you more confidence in your smile even while it’s being fixed.
