Four Facts You May Not Know About Cavities

Did you know that 92 percent of adults ages 20 to 64 have had at least one cavity in a permanent tooth? Cavities are the breakdown of teeth due to the activity of different bacteria. Cavities can present a number of symptoms, but common side effects are pain and difficulty while eating. While you probably know the basics when it comes to tooth decay, here are four facts you may not know about cavities:

1. Acid Causes Cavities and Tooth Decay

If your mother ever told you to that all of that candy you ate as a kid would rot your teeth, she was wrong…well, sort of. While many people believe that sugar is the sole cause of cavities, acidity is actually the biggest culprit. Acidic foods like lemons, oranges, grapefruit, and other citrus fruit won’t exactly cause cavities, but they do contribute to the breakdown of enamel. Unfortunately, once the enamel on your teeth is gone, there’s no getting it back. The enamel is your teeth’s first line of defense against decay, so you will be susceptible to cavities.

2. Kids and Adults are Equally Susceptible to Cavities

A common dental myth is that children are more likely to get cavities than adults. However, with the addition of fluoridated water coupled with the use of sealants and preventive care, there has been a drastic cut in tooth decay amongst school-aged children. Still, it is always important to emphasize healthy dental habits.

3. 78% of Americans Have at Least One Cavity by Age 17

While children may be less prone to cavities than in the past, it doesn’t mean they are spot free. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control, by age 17, 78 percent of Americans have a least one cavity! While this number may seem high, it is drastically lower than previous generations.

4. Tooth Decay is the #1 Chronic Childhood Illness

Although tooth decay amongst children has been on the decline, tooth decay is still the number one chronic childhood illness. In fact, pediatric dental disease is five times more common than asthma and nearly seven times more common than hay fever. Unfortunately, if left untreated, pediatric dental disease can result in malnourishment, infections and even death.
