Men and women differ in many ways, so it only makes sense that they differ in terms of how they maintain their health. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, women are more likely to see a doctor for regular checkups and to schedule appointments when sick or injured.
Not surprisingly, women are also more proactive in taking care of their teeth and gums, according to a 2011 study published in the Journal of Periodontology.
Study Findings
– Women were more than twice as likely to have had a dental checkup in the last year than men were
– Women were more likely than men to follow the treatment a dentist recommends at a dental checkup
– Women had less plaque than men and their gums were less likely to bleed when probed
– Women were 26 percent more likely than men to floss to every day
– 74 percent of women said they would be embarrassed by a missing tooth, compared to only 57 percent of men
– Women were almost twice as likely to notice missing teeth on another person than men were
– In general, women had a better understanding of what proper oral health entails and had a more positive attitude toward visiting the dentist than men.
Details of the Study
The study was conducted with more than 800 participants between the ages of 18 and 19. The participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire with questions on lifestyle, dental knowledge, dental attitude and oral health behaviors. The participants also had oral examinations performed so dentists could assess their oral health and look for signs of gum disease.
Male or Female, Oral Health Matters!
Although men and women may differ on how they treat their teeth and gums, both genders require the same level of care.
Regardless of gender, everyone needs to follow a daily oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing to prevent cavities, gum disease and other harmful conditions. Additionally, both men and women should visit a dentist for a cleaning and checkup at least twice a year.
